If You Come to 'Melaka' (or 'Malacca') - A Historical State in Malaysia

'Melaka' (native pronunciation) or Malacca (English word) is a city with great balance. Be it old ruins, artifacts, antique houses, night life, suburban areas, heart of the city, and not to mention great food. All can be found at Malacca.

Forming a small portion of Malaysia (one of the 10 over states), this is truly a town of history. Conquered by the Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese during war times, you will notice that there are many natives here with multiple races. The 'Malays', 'Chinese', 'Indians', 'Eurasians'('Chinese' with mixed 'Portuguese') and even 'Singhs'. Real natives, not expatriates. And if you are 'Caucasian', Malacca is no stranger to you. In the city center, one can usually notice tall, fair, blonde Westerners.

A recent attraction of the city is the spinning tower called the 'Menara Taming Sari'. There is also the 'Duck Boat Ride' by the 'Malacca' river. Nearby, you will find the famous 'A' Famosa' fort, which had belonged to the Portuguese, when they had conquered 'Malacca' way back in 1511.

You also have to take note of Portuguese Settlement. Portuguese Settlement is a small village 2km from town, housing the descendants of Dutch and 'Malays' and Eurasian parentage. In Malaysia, it is the only remaining of such villages. On a side note, the settlement is not really a village. Since Malaysia is a developing country, the houses there are of terrace types. During the 'San Pedro Festival' or Christmas, Portuguese Settlement is undoubtedly the star of attraction.

Hotels are aplenty. Take my word for this. From budget hotels or inns to 5 star hotels, all are located very nearby one another. For entertainment, there are Pure Bar and Arena ('Malacca' main bars and clubs), or you can even opt for 'Jim's Cottage' which has all the brewed beers you can think of. Especially if you have the foreign exchange currency advantage, you should be shopping for 'cheap' designer clothes at 'Dataran Pahlawan' and 'Mahkota Parade' and the huge, new 'Jusco' malls.

Most people here talk English. The other major 2 being the 'Malay' and 'Chinese' language. I also highly suggest you rent a bicycle to go around the town. Everything is nearby. That, I think, is what makes 'Malacca' so special in its own way. No highways tolls, no traffic jams (except festive seasons), yet you can find most things at town.

So take a look at 'Malacca'. If you travel to Malaysia (most go to 'Kuala Lumpur', the city of 'Malaysia'), be sure to include 'Malacca' in your list, besides 'KL'. Good luck and have fun.
